Cuba-SA held 9th Joint Consultative Mechanism Meeting in Havana - 30 to 31 August 2011

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Ebrahim I Ebrahim, co-chaired a successful 9th SA–Cuba Joint Consultative Mechanism (JCM) Meeting the 30 and 31st of August 2011, in Havana with his counterpart, Mr. Marcelino Medina Gonzalez, the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba.
The two delegations acknowledged the significant importance of the training of young South African people as medical professionals through Cuba’s generous offer of 80 scholarships every year. Through this program, more than 500 young South Africans, from impoverished communities, have been given the opportunity to pursue a career in primary healthcare and provide a service to their communities.

Possibilities for further similar projects are being explored. For example, Cuba has proposed that South Africa join a trilateral partnership with Norway and Cuba in the field of Public Health to assist Haiti.

South Africa ratified that it will continue to lobby for the lifting of the Economic, Trade and Financial Embargo against Cuba.

Besides paying a courtesy visit to His Excellency Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of  Cuba, Deputy Minister Ebrahim also held meetings with Her Excellency Marcia Cobas Ruiz, Deputy Minister of Public Health; and His Excellency Oscar Martinez Cordoves, Deputy Chief of the International Relations Department of the Cuban Communist Party.

Deputy Minister Ebrahim placed a floral tribute at the bust of Oliver Tambo, the late president of the African National Congress (ANC), at the African National Heroes Memorial Park in Havana.
