The NLSA rescues aircraft documentation

Preservation Services at the National Library of South Africa received a call recently from an aircraft company to rescue aircraft documentation that was flooded during a hail storm.  Although water damage cannot easily be undone, quick action to prevent mould growth and pages sticking together will prolong access to the contents.

The National Library of South Africa utilised the Air-drying techniques to dry wet material. Archival documents can best be dried out by fanning of pages and interleaving with absorbent paper.

The National Library of South Africa Preservation Services has a wealth of expertise to preserve and conserve valuable documentary material. This unit specialises in conservation treatment including book binding, book repairs, emergency preparedness and response.

A mass de-acidification facility was built in order to treat valuable documentary material to last for another 150 Years. The National Library also has advanced technological equipment for digitisation of the library material. The digitisation service is a new initiative in line with the international best practice, creating digital records for both preservation and access.

The preservation Services also trains public librarians to deal with disaster as well as other causes of damage to library collections.

For more information contact Ms Londeka Dlamini at the NLSA at 012 401 9767 or Oswald Cupido at 021 487 5634.
