Czech National Day

A traditional celebration of the Czech National Day, 28 October, Day of the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, took place on 20 October 2015. The government of South Africa was represented by Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Mr. Kebby Maphatsoe.

In his welcoming speech, the Ambassador-Designate, Mr. Michal Král, explained the significance of the year 1918 in Czech history. He said, "97 years ago the then Czechoslovakia was established and the Czech statehood was restored in its historical borders. We should be very fair to history. In 1918, after 3 centuries of not having our sovereign state, Czech Lands were however highly developed industrial country, with intensive agriculture and practically zero illiteracy. And those achievements were later a good springboard to the prosperous and democratic Czechoslovakia, a predecessor of today´s Czech Republic."

He said that 11 years after the Czech Republic's accession to the EU, it enjoys one of the highest growth rates within the EU.

The Ambassador-Designate Mr. Michal Král also talked about good relations between the Czech Republic and South Africa. He also recalled the 600th anniversary of death of Jan Hus, the key predecessor of the Protestant movement of the 16th century on whose intellectual and spiritual legacy the Moravian Church in South Africa was built, thus establishing a unique historic bond between the two countries.

The ladies from the Czech community were thanked for their preparation of traditional Czech cuisine like goulash and apple strudel and SABMiller for providing Czech beer, Pilsner Urquel.
