Traditional Neapolitan music meets South Africa

18 October 2015

The prestigious Theatre on the Square in Johannesburg hosted the musical performance "Afroneapolitan Suite" for ten cellos, an original score composed by the renowned Italian composer and jazz cellist Lucio Franco Amanti.

The project was born as a musical encounter between the talent of Amanti and that of the South African cellist Berthine van Schoor, together with the young musicians of his Academy. The concert was also to say goodbye to the Italian Ambassador, the Neapolitan Vincenzo Schioppa Narrante, to which the opera was dedicated.

The ensemble was called “Muna-Cello”, deriving its name from O Munaciello’, a fairy from the Neapolitan tradition.

The audience – which included former President of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe, members of the central and regional Government, representatives of the business community, academics, movie and TV stars – took part in a joyful and very appreciated musical performane, among classical music, folklore, jazz and traditions of both Countries.
