SOUTH AFRICAN COLOURS MESMERISE VIENNA

The South African Embassy in Vienna, together with Makhaya Arts and Cultural Development, hosted a festival entitled “South Africa in Colours”, from 23-26 June.  The venue at the prestigious Museums Quartier, one of the largest cultural complexes of its kind in the world was abuzz with visitors from Austria as well as international tourists for the duration of the event, which sought to showcase the finest in South African performing and fine arts and design.
The gala opening event was attended by more than 800 people, including VIP guests such as Minister of Energy, H.E Dipuo Peters, Chief Mandla Mandela, and Vienna Deputy Mayor, Renate Brauner, to name a few.
The Festival featured gifted South African artists such as award-winning fashion designer, David Tlale, one of South Africa’s most internationally recognised talents as well as the spectacular, Lira and vibrant African dancers.  It was also an opportunity for the Viennese to sample modern South African design including the Moyo range as well as high end craft pieces.   Simultaneously artworks by emerging South African artists such as Sam Nhlengethwa, Mbongeni Buthelezi, Kudzani Chiurai, Mary Sibanda, Yda Walt and Lawrence Lemaoana were displayed in gallery format.
The event exceeded expectations, attracting several thousand visitors daily.  For most, the format was exciting in that it allowed complete immersion in different aspects of the South African cultural experience, drawing in both modern and more traditional strains.  They also had the opportunity to participate in dance, drumming and storytelling workshops-something many relished-simply letting their hair down and revelling in the warm African spirit.
To tap into the enthusiasm about South Africa generated by the event, the Embassy hosted a tourism promotion stall and made tourism promotion presentations featuring less well known destinations in all South African provinces.
