Connecting the different capitals of Africa

Students from the Egyptian Institute for Diplomatic Studies Visit the AUC

Addis Ababa, 13th April 2015: The African Union welcomed visitors from the Egyptian Institute for Diplomatic Studies. This is the first time for the Egyptian students into the country and at the African Union Headquarters.

H.E. Dr. Elham Mahmood Ibrahim, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy department of the AUC welcomed the delegates where they had a debriefing session about the Department’s missions, achievements, challenges and visions.

Mr. David Kajange, Head of Transport and Tourism division updated the visitors on the overall responsibilities of the Infrastructure and Energy department and the various projects it has and currently being involved with, highlighting success projects such as Sustainable Energy for All Initiative (SEAALL). Since the launch of this project in 2012,  more than 80 countries are engaged with this initiative and already 42 countries in Africa are involved, a figure which puts Africa at the forefront of the implementation of this particular project.

Mr. Kajange also underlined the progress made by the AUC in the areas of transport including the railways and roads with the view to connect the different capitals of Africa. He recalled that worth noting, despite the noticeable achievements so far the Department continues to face challenges such as; low participation of Regional Economic Communities and specialized initiatives in infrastructure activities of the AUC, insufficient resources for development activities, inadequate human resources among others.

The students will also be visiting two more Nile Basin Countries, Uganda and Kenya as part of their educational tour on Infrastructure and energy development in the continent.
