Denis Goldberg honoured with German Order of Merit

German President, Christian Wulff has bestowed Denis Goldberg with the Cross of Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Denis Goldberg is honoured in recognition for his commitment and enormous contribution to strengthen the people to people contacts between Germany and South Africa and his strive for a more just world.
Ambassador Dieter W. Haller presented the Order on behalf of the German Head of State to Denis Goldberg on June 3, 2011 in Cape Town. The ceremony was attended by several political friends and comrades of Denis Goldberg.
In his laudatory remarks, Ambassador Haller of Germany to South Africa recalls Goldberg'’s commitment to close ties between South Africa and Germany. "Denis Goldberg, an icon of the struggle in South Africa, is well known in Germany, too. He stands for: a deep rooted concept of humanity, a man who dedicated his life for freedom in South Africa under Apartheid and still remains committed to maintain hard-won freedoms after the liberation in 1994. He committed himself to the development of the New South Africa, to make it a place where social justice prevails.
His social initiatives, to which much time and money was dedicated stem from the deep understanding that political change needs to be accompanied by social change. Over the course of many years Denis Goldberg has established a very broad and dense network of contacts to German institutions and eagerly shares his vision of a tolerant and peaceful world with thousands of Germans, be they academics, students or young children at school. It is through the commitment of personalities like Denis Goldberg that the forces of reconciliation are strengthened" noted Ambassador Haller.
