Italian Ambassador’s Perennial Trophy charity regatta

The second Italian Ambassador’s Perennial Trophy charity regatta was held in Cape Town on Saturday, 1 November 2014.

More than 30 yachts made waves in the amazing sea in front of Table Mountain. On board were sport champions, artists, businesspeople, sailing enthusiasts and, most importantly, the young African sailors from the RCYC Sailing Academy and the Izivunguvungu MSC Foundation for the Youth in Simon’s Town. Among the members of the diplomatic corps, the Ambassador of Austria, Ms Brigitte Oeppinger-Walchshofer, and the Ambassador of Israel, Mr Arthur Lenk, participated in the Regatta.

A gala party was held on the 31st of October at the Ambassador’s Residence in Bishopscourt to celebrate all participants. Accompanying the occasion, a new issue of Insider/South Africa, the special local edition of the well-known Italian coffee-table periodical Insider has been launched.

The prize-giving ceremony was held at the V&A Waterfront, as one of the events marking the Official Opening of the Volvo Ocean Race Village, followed by a concert and fireworks.

The friendly competition, established by the Italian Ambassador in South Africa, is organized by the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), twinned since last year with the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia of Naples (Italy). The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) supports the initiative.

The Perennial Trophy – in the words of the Italian Ambassador Vincenzo Schioppa - is a unique opportunity for further strengthening the fraternal relations between Italians and South Africans. It aims at sharing with the youth of disadvantaged communities in the Cape Region the values of the sea, of seamanship, solidarity and sport.
