"Experience a feeling you’ve never felt before. Ballet is food for the soul," expressed Dirk Badenhorst at the opening of the ballet La Bayadére in Joburg. He was speaking of the reaction of learners in schools who have never seen a ballet performance before.

Badenhorst, CEO of Joburg Ballet was speaking at a reception marking 5 years of ballet collaboration between Cuba and South Africa and 20 years of Democracy and bilateral relations between the two nations.

The collaboration saw acclaimed dancers from both countries bring a vast wealth of experience and expertise to the performance.

The opening was attended by Speaker of the South African Parliament, Ms. Baleka Mbete, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Cuba, Ms. Ana Teresita Gonzalez Fraga and Ambassador of Cuba to South Africa Carlos Fernandez de Cossio to celebrate a special relation between two peoples.

Gonzalez Fraga also met with Deputy Minister of International Relations (DIRCO) Luwellyn Landers for the SA - Cuba Joint Consultative Mechanism (JCM) during her visit.

The South Africa-Cuba Medical Programme which recently granted 126 medical bursaries presented an opportunity of a lifetime to recipients to study as medical professionals in Cuba. This defines a cooperation that goes beyond the establishment of formal ties in 1994.
