MPONDO CULTURE AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2017

Mpondo Culture and Heritage Festival was launched in 2006 in commemoration of Nkosi Ntsikayezwe Sigcau (1947-1996), an ANC activist and stalwart, who made a meaningful and significant contribution in the liberation struggle of South Africa. It was launched to promote, market, develop and share Mpondo Culture and Heritage with fellow South Africans and the world at large as well as to, preserve Mpondo culture, heritage, language and history to contribute to SA’s broader heritage and government’s vision of a better life for all.

The Festival advocates for cultural diplomacy and cultural tourism and promotion of economic, cultural, rural and social development.  It seeks to attract investment to Mpondoland as well as market the Kingdom as a cultural and environmental tourism destination.

The festival is multi-culture in nature and thus encourages cultural exchange, sharing of diversity of cultures and unity in a diversity of cultures. It is attended by diverse social, cultural and tribal groups and Kingships from various parts of South Africa and beyond the borders.

Among this year’s festival highlights, is the conferring of Awards to outstanding personalities who continue to make a difference locally, to South Africa and Humanity at large in various ways as well as contributing to culture and heritage development. Mama Winnie Mandela is the recipient of the first ever King Sigcau Bravery and Lifetime Award during the 2017 Festival for the role and the sacrifices she made in the liberation struggle, contribution towards nation building, and the role she continues to play for a better life for all in South Africa.

This year’s recipient of the Queen Mamjoli Award is Wits Professor Mzikazi Nduna, a member of the of the gender based violence Prevention Network for the Horn, East and Southern Africa for the amazing role she plays on the issues around gender based violence.

Previous recipients of Nkosi Ntsikayezwe Sigcau Memorial Award include Adv Sonwabile Mancotywa, CEO: National Heritage Council; former Minister of labour and SA’s former Ambassador in Canada HE Membathisi Mdladlana; Deputy Minister of Labour Phathekile Holomisa, Madiba T-Shirts founder and CEO of Vukani fashions, Prince Sonwabile Ndamase amongst others. Princess Stella Sigcau II former recipients include Swiss Humanitarian and CEO of Impulse NGO Ms Verena Gauthier, Ms Creselda Kananda Dudumashe, HIV Activist amongst others.

Traditional Music Awards are also conferred to local and international Groups eg Kanvuthu Traditional Group and Casper the golden voice both from the Republic of Botswana are former recipients of the King Jongilizwe Awards and Jongilanga Awards are conferred to local traditional groups.

The annual Mpondo Culture and Heritage Festival is an important event that was established for the preservation and promotion of the values and way of life of the Mpondo people, and has grown throughout the years since it was initiated, with esteemed dignitaries turning up to grace the occasion, as is expected for this year as well.

It will be held on the 9 September in Ntabankulu, Mpondo Kingdom, Eastern Cape. Over 15 000 people are expected to attend.
