India can feed the world

2 February 2017

India’s culinary history spans over 5000 years.  Settlers, invaders and occupiers alike were introduced to a vast spectrum of spices and flavours that they integrated to their own food recipes and over centuries a mesmerising range of tastes and textures culminated to give rise to a culinary giant that is Indian food today.

It seems that innovative developments in Indian food production and processing are once again resurging. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Government of India has been responsible for invigorating the commercial food sector. India is an agrarian society, feeding its 1.3 billion citizens is a daily priority. It also provides a significant market for food producers.

The Flavours of India promotion program of APEDA recently held in Johannesburg in association with the High Commission of India in South Africa showcased the immense strides India has made in its capacity in agro processing and food production. It has developed packaging that has simplified some of the complex and complicated Indian recipes into just adding water or heating in a microwave.

Frozen foods, cereals and mueslis are also being produced for the global consumer market.

India has the largest number of cattle in the world, is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables and together with its historic culinary past it has become a net exporter of food.
